How it works
- Prep – ease the cuticle back with the wooden pusher.
- File – long, light strokes with the Strip take off only what is already dead.
- Buff – two or three passes to smooth the edge.
- Seal – a little Balm massaged in. With the Complete Kit, a few strokes of the Shiner give the nail its gloss.
FAQ
Isn't this just an expensive nail file?
It isn't, and the difference is not the price. A nail file is grit on card, made to shorten a hard nail. Ours is an instrument made for skin, engineered from the abrasive up.
The grit is coastal quartz, graded fine enough to lift dead skin from the cuticle and leave the living edge untouched. The file itself flexes, and it sits on a curved core with an overhang set so that the working edge gives the moment you press too hard. That give is the safety system, because an edge that bends cannot dig in, which is why the method is gentle enough that our founder uses it on her five-year-old.
The grade, the curve, the flex and the way it is held were all worked out against a single technique, the File Manicure™, and the tool exists to make that technique possible. That is what you are paying for, and it is why the results build week after week instead of resetting every fortnight.
Does it hurt?
No. The file only works on dead skin, so there is nothing to nick. If it ever stings, you're pressing too hard — ease off, or send us a photo and we'll walk you through it.
How long does it take?
It depends on your hands and how overgrown things are. The first manicure takes a while with the video open; once you know the strokes, most people are done in minutes.
How long does a Kit last?
Up to ten weeks. At home each Strip and Buff can be used several times; they're single-use only in a salon.
Can I buy refills instead of a whole Kit?
Buffers are available on their own now. File refills are coming; subscribers will get them first.
Does it work with polish or gel?
Yes. Fyle is the prep. It makes whatever goes on top sit better and last longer, and it's just as good with nothing on top at all.
What's the difference between The Kit and The Complete Kit?
The Shiner. It gives the nail itself a natural gloss that lasts around two weeks, so bare nails look finished without polish. Most people choose the Complete Kit.
My cuticles are very overgrown. Will it cope?
Yes, gradually. Work in stages rather than clearing everything in one go, and expect the real change after at least six weeks, when the cuticle stops thickening.

What cutting does
Nippers and e-files take living tissue along with the dead, and the body answers an injury by rebuilding thicker. That is why the appointments never end.
What filing does
A fine file takes only what is already dead, so nothing is wounded and nothing grows back in defence. The cuticle stays supple, and there is less to do each time.
What it costs
A salon manicure is £40 to £70, and fortnightly that is £1,000 to £1,800 a year. One Kit costs about the same as one visit and lasts up to ten weeks.
On your terms
The appointment sets the pace, and a fortnight later you need another. The File Manicure™ takes five minutes at your kitchen table, whenever it suits you, with or without colour on top.

Well, I'm a prolific cuticle picker, I've tried everything to stop, but was in a cycle of using cuticle clippers to cut my cuticles, picking, bleeding, picking the scabs etc.
I bought Fyle as a last ditch resort to improve my cuticles and try and get out of the cycle of cutting my cuticles. After just one use my cuticles already looked so much better. Still trying to stop my bad picking habit, but I am improving! Seriously impressed with the Fyle system, will keep using it !

I am loving this kit! I have battled hard skin on my fingers for years - no amount of hand cream helps and I end up biting or snipping the skin. My nails looked better after the first go! I would love an instruction sheet in the box as the video is a bit quick. Also, my hands are not as dextrous as they used to be so this system is a bit tricky for me but I will keep practicing.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure to expect. I do my own nails at home. I usually use a cuticle cream to remove pushback in a cuticle cutter to trim. This time I didn’t do that. I just used the Fyle system on dry cuticles and it looks really nice. I will continue using it in my weekly nail routine. I’m actually super surprised at how good it looked!

I was initially reluctant to invest, especially with the cost of shipping to the US, but I’m so glad I did. The design is beautiful and minimalist, and it fits perfectly with the philosophy behind the method.
I’ve had Fyle for two weeks, and it’s pretty amazing how much nicer my nails already look. I tend to pick and nip at my cuticles, and using Fyle smooths everything so there’s less to pick at. I love the balm and have been using it daily, which is helping me get into the habit of caring for my nails this way. My nails look good, and my cuticles and the skin around my nails look elegant. My hands look professionally done. I can already see how, with better education and technique, this method and these tools can make a real difference.
That said, the learning curve is high, despite how simple the method appears. There’s currently only one tutorial, and it’s fairly quick. I’d love to see more instruction on challenging areas, particularly where the proximal and lateral nail folds meet. Those are areas that people who pick at their nails tend to target, and mine definitely need some extra attention.
My first session took well over an hour and a half, and I spent too much time trying to figure out the technique on my own. The small circular motions are surprisingly difficult to get the hang of, and I kept rewatching that part of the video. I would love more education on technique, especially how to work gently around the sidewalls and get into those corners without overdoing it.
Some other tutorial ideas: filing with the non-dominant hand, working on the thumbs, and dealing with hangnails.
I’m really impressed with the results after only two weeks, and I’m excited to keep learning the method. I think the tools are excellent, but the learning experience would benefit enormously from more detailed tutorials.

On the tutorial, it's always been a balance for us. We could make it extremely detailed, but we never wanted people to feel overwhelmed by the length before they've even started. Your feedback has given us a clear idea though: we're looking at offering two versions, a quick one for getting started and a much more detailed one covering exactly the areas you mention, like the corners where the side and proximal folds meet, the sidewalls, thumbs, the non-dominant hand and hangnails.
In the meantime, the corners get easier if you stretch the skin away with your other thumb and use short, light strokes with the tip of the strip rather than circles. Hangnails you can file flat, but anything deep or sore is better snipped carefully than filed.
